Good but not amazing

I like Destino. They can accomodate a decent sized party of people. The staff is nice, the food and drinks are good. However their price to food awesome ratio is not great. If I could get out of here spending about $20 per person as opposed to about $50 I would love it beyond belief. But I've had $50 meals and this wasn't one of them.

The decor is nice. I didn't find it too loud. But since the plates are small, to get a good filling dinner you need to get a number of plates to be satisfied. And yes I know this is how a small plates place works, but this isn't as good as other places in town.

All that said if money isn't an issue at all. Go for it. You'll have a good meal in a nice atmosphere. Totally good for a first date.

Where you can feel all of the charm of a woodsy ski lodge without freezing

I love this cafe. Me and upper Fillmore, we're not always pals. However the Grove is worth weathering the nouveau riche and the yuppies for the great atmosphere, super nice staff and tasty food.

Nice rich wood walls. Well priced red wines. A chicken pot pie that is to die for. Cafe sized tables good to sit and write at, leather couches near a fireplace, and free wifi. I usually go here at night to write and enjoy the candlelit woodsy feel and work on writing with either a great coffee drink or a glass of wine.

Yes actual beignets in SF

Most folks aren't going to accidentally come across this charming Dogpatch breakfast joint. But when you arrive, be prepared for a 20 - 45 minute wait as this is one of those locals only places that inspires crazy amounts of loyalty and passion.

The food goes from basic breakfast to crazy huge hangover cure omelets that involve oysters. They have a flair for some regional specialties and while I don't know if the owner or cook hails from the Big Easy the beignets sure taste like it.

Costs are fair going from $5 - 12 for breakfast. They close around 3pm so don't sleep too late for brunch and make this a definite regular spot.

Amazing atmosphere and food that is way above average

First let me say - blueberry salad. OMG. It's like heaven.

Next let me say - their gnocci. OMG. It's worth sinning for.

Then you can get into the ambience which is casual, with elements of Day of the Dead, and generally playful folksy. It's a cloth napkins but no tablecloths kind of place and usually had good local photography on the walls.

The times I've gone without a reservation and done the 10-45 minute wait they've usually offered a glass of wine to make the waiting easier. Entrees are in the $10 - 20 range for California Italian food. You get fresh warm bread at the table and generally pretty nice service.

Best Hidden Coffee in the Castro

A good place to get beans or candy in bulk, Spike's also has a good homey vibe, a little bit of seating indoors and out, a nice pastry selection and the nicest staff I've met in SF.

It's only a block off the main Castro drag, but it seems to be far enough up the hill that its not always mobbed with tourists, allowing it to stay a local secret. The house coffee is strong and good. The espresso drinks are diving and if you get something foamy you are likely to get a heart in your foam. I am a sucker for that sort of thing.

I love Spikes!

Flavored coffee, good espresso and imported cheese

My favorite thing about this coffee stand is the family that owns it. They are charming and I love coming in and being treated like a regular even if I haven't been in in months.

They're a walk up get your coffee and leave stand with lots of beans for sale in addition to coffee ephemera and imported cheese. For being a specialty shop their cheese prices are close to wholesale and you can usually find a great deal. The flavored coffee is fine if you like that sort of thing but it is a little weak. The espresso however is closer to perfect and a definite good purchase.

Good friggin cookies!

My wife's favorite from here are the mini chocolate chip cookies. And you know - they are super good and super chocolatey. They definitely surpass the regular size cookies. And the cookies here are often served warm, are cooked right on the premises and are more than fresh.

It's a basic walk up stand without a lot of room so be prepared to head on in, order and get out quickly.

Best unique thing? Where else can you buy chocolate covered macaroons that are penis shaped? I mean - come on - awesome!

Good and basic

The atmosphere here is a little nicer than Escape from NY down the street and there is seating unlike Nizario's so if you want to relax a little while you eat it's a good place. Still basic pizza by the slice they gave some attention to making the interior feel like an old school Italian joint and the pizza is better for it.

In terms of the food itself, it's fine. Nothing to write home about but completely good enough and serviceable if you just need to meet that pizza craving.

Best slice in town

As far as basic places to just get a quick slice go - Nizario's blows all the other places in town out of the water. The seating is non existent so don't plan on lounging. But, the crusts are always crispy and the cheese has a nice rich flavor. If you go for pepperoni I don't think I have honestly ever had it better. I used to work at the Castro Theater and tried every pizza place near here and this always won hands down. Crispy pepperoni and always meat and veggies that tasted better than the other places.

So good. Hell I wanna get a slice right now.

Good Basic Pizza

So I am not sure if I would exactly say that this is New York pizza, but it is super tasty and they have some nice unusual combinations of toppings that are considered classics to locals. The pepperoni is good but if you want your socks knocked off go for the potato pesto pizza. It's overwhelmingly good.

There are a few tables inside and some cute pop culture ephemera on the walls - but this is a simple place to just grab a slice.
